Way back in 2008 I was introduced to soft pastels as a medium, and something else that has captured my heart since that time - velour paper!
I've only used soft pastels on two types of surfaces, watercolour paper and velour. And let's just say that I will not be doing more work with the watercolour paper.
Velour is a nifty paper that actually has a layer of fibres on one side, imagine something similar to velvet. The fibres capture the pastel dust perfectly, the colours are vibrant and in my eyes it gives everything a lovely dream-like quality. I simply love the stuff.
I took a break from the medium for a few years, and finally felt the urge to give it another shot recently. That sent me digging through my supplies for my trusty soft pastels and velour paper!

These first two functioned to break that lengthy gap since the last time I used pastels. Both are small, 5"x7" and on a black surface. The kingfisher was particularly fun to work with.

Small pieces are nice for a practice run, but with something like pastels, a smaller size severely limits your range for detail.
Next up was a larger piece, the subject being inspired by the photos my boyfriend has from his childhood in South Africa.
Although realism artwork has always had a place in my heart, I personally love to push the boundaries: skew reality, clash the subjects, adjust the colours, throw a twist in here and there.
Black and white zebras? Not in my head!

While searching through a wonderful stock photo database, I came across this one photo of an egret that spoke to me; the photo has a ghost-like quality, which was further amplified by the whiteness of the bird. Naturally I had to recreate it.
